With TunnelBear you can easily flip a switch between using either a U.S. or a U.K. VPN server, and to start with you get 500MB of monthly bandwidth allowance. If you’re willing to promote TunnelBear with a tweet you can earn an additional 1GB each month that you post something about them to your Twitter account. If you decide to upgrade to an unlimited plan it’s surprisingly cheap at just $5 per month or $50 for a year.

One of the important things to consider with a service like this is the performance you’ll get. I’d say in my tests the speed isn’t too bad. I am in the United States, and when using the U.K. VPN I received 4.1Mbps down and 1.3Mbps up. That’s not bad considering the distance between my house and the server I was connected to. When using the U.S. VPN I received 10.1Mbps down and 3.6Mbps up. Neither of them were able to come close to maxing out my home internet speed, but if you were looking to just do some music streaming those speeds should probably be good enough.

Free VPN Services / SecurityKISS Tunnel Free VPN
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:31:38 PM »
Although there are many free services, most of them have very less monthly bandwidth. SecurityKISS is an awesome free VPN service for Windows which offer best features. SecurityKISS Tunnel is a VPN  implementation based on OpenVPN. Once of the unique features of the app is that its very simple to use and does not require any registration or user account.

All you need to do is to start the app and click on the connect button and the app connects to the VPN. The service provides you with 300 MB per day in the free plan. Although the free usage is small for a full time internet user, it still is very good compared to other free VPN services. We checked the speed available and it was really good.

The best feature of this VPN is the ease with which you can get started with the service. You can also change the VPN server using the app interface.

The free version has five servers listed, with 2 in US and UK and one in Germany.

Overall SecurityKISS service was pretty good.

Yes there are free ones but you get what you pay for.

The ones mentioned cost money.

If you're serious about online privacy do your research and find a good one, there are lots out there.

VPN Discussion / Re: Explanation of a VPN?
« on: January 28, 2013, 07:10:02 AM »
All of the above.

A VPN...allows you to access resources inside of another network, by connecting your computer to the network through a "tunnel".

You can get access to a share on a server
And other servers...
And other workstations.
And remote to a desktop if you want, or to a server..using RDP
You can launch an application and get access to the database on a server

Basically you can do everything you could do...if your computer was connected to that office network. Just...a bit slower. Because you're connected at the slow rate of going across the internet.

There are software VPNs...software VPN server...a service like RRAS running on the server. And you have software VPN clients...even built into Windows....PPTP, IPSec.

And you have hardware VPN appliances...a hardware VPN server....handles all the connections and processing power. And you can have a piece of hardware be the VPN client also. Many routers support being clients.

Using the hardware VPN server and hardware VPN tunnels (like a router on each end)...you can create full time VPN tunnels...and this is one of the ways we make "wide area networks"...WANs. Satellite/branch offices networks are connected to the "mothership" office....so they can access resources just like their buildings were connected...because in essence, their networks are connected.

VPN Discussion / Re: Introducing VPNDirect Affiliate Program
« on: January 26, 2013, 01:58:48 AM »
Did you already earn something from them? I believe this is how those vpn review sites earn, all the link that goes to the vpn provider they review is an affiliate link right?

VPN Discussion / Re: Best VPN for me
« on: January 26, 2013, 01:36:58 AM »
I would stay away from astrill vpn. I own a website devoted to objective vpn reviews, and when I attempted to contact Astrill to review their vpn, I received this response. "We do not affiliate with vpn review websites."

There are not many reasons why a vpn would take this stance. In my opinion, the most likely reason is that they offer inferior service and as such depend on their customers being under-informed.

Maybe they just do not want to give out free vpn accounts. You can always buy a 1 month package from them so you can review their service.

:)

I think the setting is Use Default Gateway on Remote Network. By default - this is checked. Uncheck it and whatever network you are on (assigned via IP/subnet) will be routed out the VPN tunnel. All other network traffic will route out your LAN gateway.

Any chance of a guide to setting up a VPN on a Motorola Xoom that has been upgraded to Icecream Sandwich, 4.0.4 ?

No problems before but now, after upgrade, it requires one to supply Identity information.

Tim

Edit: Problem solved, one has to enable screen lock.

It can remove/unblock content, services and different websites that is normally blocked by your ISP.

It can anonymize your connection because nobody likes to be spied on and tracked. it will secure and encrypt your connection especially if you use public access internet such as Wifi, Hotel or Cell Phone internet. Using PD-Proxy makes it impossible for others to spy on you, they can't even see what sites you are visiting when you are using PD-Proxy.
