A year after breaking into the fibre broadband scene with promises of un-throttled speeds and no data caps, Singapore-based fibre broadband start-up MyRepublic has unveiled a new service that lets subscribers connect to popular video streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu and BBC iPlayer.

This Teleport service is not a VPN (virtual private networking) service used usually to provide such video streaming. Instead, MyRepublic’s new add-on to its broadband services is a proprietary technology promising zero effort from the user to install or configure.

Instead of routing all of a user’s traffic through a foreign server, Teleport integrates fully within MyRepublic’s Internet links, which come with a promise of better speeds. Also unlike a traditional VPN, Teleport will provide redirection only for pre-approved websites.

So you could be watching Netflix through Teleport, for example, but it won’t let you access sites restricted in Singapore, such as Playboy.com.

This means that MyRepublic has full control over which sites Teleport users can access. Currently, the service works only with Hulu, Netflix, and Pandora, but the company is working to add more sites, promising at least 20 websites by its launch in June.

If there is a particular site that you want to access, you can suggest it to MyRepublic for their consideration, the company said on Thursday, in a event to celebrate its first anniversary.

Teleport’s user-friendliness may appeal to the regular consumer, but power users who don’t mind a little set-up and configuration will probably still prefer a traditional VPN option for its flexibility.

In any case, the additional choice will benefit consumers looking to cut the cord and access over-the-top content provided over the Net instead of traditional pay-TV set-top boxes.

MyRepublic will invite 1,000 of its customers to participate in a public beta test of Teleport in early April. The add-on to its broadband service is estimated to cost around S$5 a month at launch later this year.

VPN Discussion / Re: How do I pick a VPN provider?
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:45:59 AM »
First you should ask your self: What advantage does a VPN provider have over providing your own with something like OpenVPN? If you are paranoid you could get a Virtual private Server(VPS) host. Other than that I would make sure that the service was fast, cheap and wasn't in the news for a security breach.

As super said, it's usually a checkbox for "use default gateway" that needs to be cleared to change from Full Tunnel to Split Tunnel.

Do a "route print" before and after connecting the vpn, and you'll likely find the problem.

I had the same problem, turns out its an easy solution.

Connect to the VPN as stated on the tutorial, then right click on the VPN connection -> Properties -> TCP/IPv4 properties -> advanced -> untick “use as default gateway”

This way you can use your own internet connection not that of the VPN, whilst still accessing the VPN files etc.

Hope that helps

PPTP via PoPToP is easy

 1.Install pptpd

Code: [Select]
apt-get install pptpd
  2. edit /etc/pptpd.conf and set the remoteip option to a range on your network that is NOT served by your DHCP server.

  3. edit /etc/ppp/chap-secrets and add a username and password

e.g.
vpnuser pptpd vpnpassword *

This is all it takes to setup pptp. Now test it with your OS X client.

VPN Discussion / Is YourFreedom a VPN?
« on: December 10, 2012, 11:27:46 PM »
My country disallowed VPNs a few months back and said that if someone uses it they'll have to ask for permission beforehand. And now it plans to ban some social media websites. My question is, is YourFreedom a VPN? And if I use it, can the government find out that I'm using it?

VPN Client Setup Support / How to remove privitize VPN completely?
« on: December 06, 2012, 01:06:31 AM »
I was using TPB yesterday and saw the privitizevpn advertisement, since it says that it is free I installed it on my machine. I did manage to remove the software from the windows control panel but the default searches in browsers is now different. The URL search bar affected chrome and firefox.

I scanned through the registry to remove anything and everything which says privitize and did manage to remove so. But it is still there in firefox and chrome.

How to remove this completely from the system ?

Where do you buy your servers? Do you need a dedicated server or a VPS is enough?
